Breath is central to yoga because it is central to life and yoga is about life

(T. Krishnamacharya)

Discovering Yoga was like having the key to a full and conscious life.

Patanjali’s yoga is an embodied philosophy (Darshana) that has guided me from the first contact in 1998. The word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit root yuj and translates as ‘unite’. Yoga unites personal, relational, social, and universal dimensions. Yoga has an ecological and holistic dimension of life. And with the mere fact of becoming aware of the breath we become aware of ourselves and of LIFE.

By working on the quality of breathing, we work on the quality of our mind and our overall health.

"The small space inside the heart is as big as this vast universe. The heavens and the earth are there, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars; fire and lightning and winds are there; and all that is now and all that is not: for all the universe is in Him, and He dwells in our hearts."

(Chandogya Upanishad)

The yoga I practice comes from the teaching of Krishnamacharya through the spreading of it by his son TKV Desikachar. It is also often known as Viniyoga because it is Yoga that adapts to people and not people to Yoga.

The fundamentals of the practice are:

1. The Yoga-Sutra of Patanjali, as the reference and path of the Union practice, complemented by the Bhagavad-Gîta, Yoga-Rahasya, Yoga-Yajnavalkya, Hatha-Yoga-Pradîpikâ and Yoga Makaranda.

2. Personal attention of the teacher to every student.

3. The adaptation of the Yoga practice to each person with respect for age, gender, abilities, aspirations and activities (Viniyoga). The introduction of variations, refinements and modifications of positions to suit individual needs.

4. The practice of asanas in Vinyasa to prepare for static observation.

5. Breath synchronisation with movement, and application of the Vinyāsa-krama idea, or progression in practice: warm-up, progression, intensity, compensation, and return to calm.

6. The respiratory phases are associated with the functional movements of the asana. Generally, we breathe out in motions that bring limbs towards the body, and breathe in with gestures that distance limbs from the body.

7. The use of "ujjāyi" breathing while adopting the positions.

8. Incorporation of Pratikryāsana or compensation positions with balancing effects.

9. The practice of asanas is preparation for Pranayama, which are exercises in mindful management of breathing prior to meditation.

10. Bhāvana (mental attitude) is used during the practice of asanas and pranayama, directing the mind to favour concentration and meditation.
